What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a move away from the dualistic splitting of the mind from the body towards a model of integrated functioning of the whole person, psyche and Soma. The Greek word Soma as introduced into modern psychology by Thomas Hanna is defined as “the body experienced from within”
Somatic therapy recognises that the practices of psychotherapy in the modern western world reflects a split between body and mind as Modern psychology has divided us as humans assigning the mind and feelings to psychotherapists or analysis, and bodies to bodyworker practitioners. This split has reinforced the body-mind split that a lot of us in today’s world suffer from. Therefore, Somatic Therapy came to build bridges between the once separated process of psyche, soma and spirit towards a holistic approach. Unfortunately this recognition of this integration only happens to us when we suffer at the body level and particularly when we suffer from unresolved issues i.e. chronic health problems and issues.
